An accurate and vivid depiction of life in boarding schools
Second Home is the rare book that offers readers a true overview of life in America's boarding schools. Whether from a teacher or student, this collection of essays discusses everything from making friends to meals and chapel to art class. This is a book for those interested in applying to boarding school or for those interested in the various opportunities that exist in an institution as old as the nation. This is a fine piece of work.

This is "Great" reading
Well, I also enjoyed reading Mr. Burrus 2nd book "The Secret of Glow Hill". Looks like Chris and Luke were getting themselves into some very hot water, but thanks to Ms. Watson coming along they were able to ......... well (it's in the book). I just have a feeling we are going to here from the "DOCTOR" again. Anyway, two great books that I would recommend anyone read.END

The Sensitive Child (Challenging Child)
Published in Paperback by St Martins Mass Market Paper (August, 1996)
Authors: Janet Poland and Judi Craig
Average review score:

The Sensitive Child
I picked this book up on a whim, and have been very glad I did. I had assumed that "sensitive" was synonymous with shy. Since my child was by no means shy, I didn't think I would get much out of this book. What I discovered was that there are several areas of sesitivity, and that shyness was only one area. I was often frusterated with my child who complained about the seam on her socks and clothes bothering her, and how she would get over-excited when confronted with a lot of visual stimulous and noise. This book helped me understand her in a way I never did before, and I have been able to help her learn to take control of situations so she doesn't become hyper anymore. I will always be grateful for the authors for helping me understand and help my child blossom in ways I never thought possible.

The Shakespeare authorship question; evidence for Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford
Published in Unknown Binding by Dorrance ()
Author: Craig Huston
Average review score:

Will or not Will
Craig Huston makes a strong claim as he presents evidence, turns inconsistencies to shreds, and develops logical conclusions to support his claim that William Shakespeare was the pseudonym used by the 17th Earl of Oxford and not the William Shakespeare of Stratford and "second best bed" fame. He makes one wonder how one has been fooled for so long and why the "hoax" still persists. I saw and heard the author when he came to Guilford College in 1992 to speak about this book. He was as convincing then as he is in this book.

Shang Han Lun: On Cold Damage, Translation & Commentaries
Published in Hardcover by Paradigm Pubns (August, 1999)
Authors: Craig Mitchell, Feng Ye, Nigel Wiseman, Zhongjing Zhang, and Chung-Ching Chang
Average review score:

On Cold Damage True to Tradition
There have been other translations of Shang Han Lun (the Treatise on Cold Damage) into English, but this is the first to preserve the original's clinical detail and precise terminology. It is also the first to include the most commonly encountered edition of the original Chinese text, both in characters and in Pinyin tone marks. Since the number of characters used in the original text is few, this book is a good text for those wishing to learn ancient medical Chinese as well as a useful clinical reference.

The text commentaries, while useful and appropriate, are limited to the original applications of the herbal formulas described in the Shang Han Lun. It is disappointing that the authors chose not to cover later applications of these formulas, as the inclusion of such material would have made the text authoritative. However, what the work lacks in breadth, it makes up for in depth by being the most comprehensive and unadulterated look at the original Shang Han Lun system of herbal medicine available in English.

Unfortunate is the adoption of coauthor Nigel Wiseman's exotic English terms for traditional Chinese medical phrases, which are uniformly neologisms or new, awkward usage of existing and often unrelated English words. This choice makes for difficult reading, but Mr Wiseman's terms are explained in detail both in situ and in the excellent glossary section of this book. Liberal use of the glossary will make clear to the reader words and turns of phrase which otherwise seem designed to obfuscate.

Despite a few faults, this book is a landmark translation for the English-speaking practitioner of Chinese medicine wishing to study the theory and practice of the Shang Han Lun, or to begin learning ancient medical Chinese. What it may lack in the details of execution, it more than makes up for with an overall solid translation, including the original Chinese text, and a useful glossary. The coauthors manage to convey a clear sense of this way of looking at infectious diseases and epidemiology, a way very different from the modern Western view, but also eerily similar on closer examination. This book will be welcomed, both by the clinician and the advanced student.

Signs of Life Review
The sensitivity of the person shows in his poetry about nursing. The serious ills and problems are dealt with in a professional manner. Nurses are under strains and I am sure that writings like this help the nurse as well as the readers.
